It’s going to be busy! We have a lot of planning, learning, traveling and reflecting to do in the next few weeks!
Tuesday, January 30th: Kindergarten Professional Learning Cycle
Teachers/ECEs working with our Learning Coach, Vicki Steele to bring “Number Talks” to our Early Years classrooms. We are working collaboratively to help students build mental math and computation strategies. Guided Math is essential in all of our classrooms.
Wednesday, January 31st: Sharing Assembly 9 am
This month’s character trait is Teamwork. Please join us for a special presentation and recognition of award winners. I couldn’t think of a school that better exemplifies teamwork than ours!
It’s also a School Sprit Day and in honour of TEAMWORK please wear your favourite sports team colours, jersey, hat, scarf, bandana or make a sign. We are celebrating all of your favourites!!!!
Thursday, February 1st: Cardboard Boat Challenge
The Scarborough competition for Skills Ontario’s Cardboard Boat Challenge takes place today! Our team has been designing and testing prototypes for weeks. The “Litty Kitty” and “Oh Buoy” are hopefully going to prove worthy at this exciting competition.
Thank you to Ms. Nolan (parent volunteer) for supporting Ms. Wilkins and Ms. Gillan as the 2 teams prepare to compete. What a great experience this has been for our students. Thank you to Variety Village for allowing our students to test their boats in your facilities.
February 6th -9th: Grade 8 Trip to Quebec City
Ms. Gillan is accompanying Mr. Knight, Ms. Wilkins, and Ms. Fletcher and 38 Grade 8 students to Quebec City. We’ll be practising our French, touring amazing landmarks, and enjoying some Snow Tubing while we’re there. There will be Administrative coverage in the school for the Principal in my absence.
Wednesday,February 7th: Grade 4 – 6 Basketball Tournament Hosted by Courcelette PS
Mr. Moore and Mr. Montuno are hosting several schools for a basketball tournament which should be lots of fun and continue to build our students’ skills.
Kearney Information Night: February 12th 6:30 pm in the Library
Information packages and permission forms will be going home this week for our overnight Grade 6 Trip to Kearney (Scarborough Outdoor Education Centre) which takes place March 5 – 7th. Parents/guardians are encouraged to contact the school with questions or concerns. During the evening Information Night, we will review the itinerary of fun activities and educational opportunities planned for this trip.
Monday, February 12th: Toronto Police Services Emergency Procedures Practice.
Officer Tony Santeramo will be training staff in current Lockdown and Hold and Secure procedures as well as practising a drill with students and the school community.
Tuesday, February 13th: Term 1 Reports go home
Parent-Teacher Interviews will take place after school on the 15th and during the morning of the 16th. Notices come home this week for teacher or parent/guardian requests for interviews. If you have questions or concerns, please contact your child’s teacher.
February 14th & 15th: Caribou Math Competition
Students in Grade 3/4 will complete the completion at lunch on the 14th and students in Grades 5 – 8 will participate on the 15th. Please bring your lunch to school.
One of our Caribou participants has put forth the idea of a Math Buddies Program.
The idea is to provide mentorship to younger students and help them strengthen their math skills in Number Sense & Numeration. Stay tuned everyone, as we continue to promote a Growth Mindset around mathematics at our school and do very intentional work with our classes to help students with math anxiety and test preparedness. Great work everyone!
